Parents and staff working together to keep your children safe!
As we mentioned in our safety message last year, ensuring the safety of the students, faculty, and staff is and continues to be a priority for HES staff and Site Council members. Events over the past several years have raised the need to enforce rules involving visitors and the process of how they enter and travel within the facility. The rules we ask to be enforced are not new. Prior to last year, we were a little relaxed in enforcing them. This process is not intended to be inconvenient or dissuade communication between parents and teachers. We have the responsibility to ensure everyone’s safety and allow for optimal learning experiences. Unplanned interruptions to the classroom can interfere with the teaching and learning taking place. If there is no legitimate reason for being present in the building, this can directly affect the safety of everyone inside.
The elementary student handbook, found in the student agenda, addresses the Visitor’s Policy on page 24-25:
Entrance to the elementary building is through the East entrance. All visitors to the school building are to check in at the office and get a Visitor’s badge before proceeding to other parts of the buildings. Visitors are asked to stop back by the office and check out. Persons requesting to relay messages to students, teachers, or other employees should stop in the office to make the proper arrangements. Those who do not comply with this regulation will be considered unauthorized persons and could be reported to the authorities and charged with trespassing…Visitor’s badges will be granted by the administration only to members of approved groups and to those with official business. This restriction does not apply to parents of students attending Herington USD #487 as they are encouraged and invited to visit the schools to become acquainted with the program. If they contact the office, the proper arrangements will be made.
Additionally, the student handbook addresses Balloons/Flowers/Student Deliveries on page 11.
If balloons or flowers are to be delivered to the school, they will be kept in the office until the end of the school day. Singing messages will not be permitted at school. Classroom treats or goodies are to be delivered and handled by elementary office staff. Office staff will make sure the classroom teacher is notified and appropriate student is given their treats.
It is encouraged that our parents be actively involved in the education and development of the students. There are multiple ways to effectively and safely communicate with the school and staff in order to enhance the learning experience: (1) facilitate communication through the office, (2) email the teacher or staff, (3) call the teacher or staff to schedule an appointment, (4) leave messages for the teacher or staff in student’s agenda.
If there are any additional questions or concerns, please contact the Herington Elementary School Site Council at 785-258-3234.
